Unstoppable

MOTION

Client: LFVM (Fictitious Mexican Women's Volleyball League).

A 2D motion ad for a fictitious female volleyball tournament in Mexico, with a core message, "Together, we are unstoppable".

Role

Motion Designer / Brand Designer / Storyboard Artist / Animator / Art Director.

Timeline

APR - AUG 2026.

Tools

After Effects / Illustrator / Procreate Suite / Cinema 4D

LFVM is a fictitious female volleyball tournament organization that is preparing for their new season with upgrades: new teams, locations, and media coverage. As such, LFVM needs a rebrand and an ad campaign showing that Volleyball can be as enticing as other big league sports, by highlighting female athletes, their skills and the intensity of Volleyball.

The Challenge

Develop a max 45 second 2D motion advertisement that showcases the greatness of volleyball and female athletes.

The Process

Why female volleyball? Why does this project matter?

As I was developing this idea, I thought of friends and family that have played or watched Volleyball and how underrepresented this incredible sport and the amazing female athletes are in Mexican media, so I decided to dedicate this project to both: Volleyball inspired me as it has great qualities such as team building, athlete skill, and strategy that I consider important to show to the audience so we all can learn that together we can make everything better: and representing female athletes is important to combat gender inequality within the sports industry (and also the world) and inspire them to participate in and watch sports.

Target audience

As for my target audiences, we have two overlapping groups, both 20–45, middle class in Mexico, who watch sports as an interest but also socially but differ in:

Sports Watchers are aware of volleyball but never felt the urge to watch.

Volleyball Enthusiasts consume some volleyball content but default to more accessible sports.

Ideation and first approaches

First Script

Act 1: High stakes - Starts setting up the scene, a character shown tired, and the intensity of the league and game.

Act 2: Game on - We cut to different dynamic scenes that show the risks players take to keep the game going.

Act 3: Who won? - We leave the viewer at a cliffhanger, not knowing who won, and feeling the need to watch more.

First storyboard: the first storyboard was too long for a 45 sec ad.

The never-ending storyboard: the storyboard as well as the initial script went under multiple changes, since the tone of voice, time and meaning of the ad mattered the most.

First Storyboard (39 frames) and Third Storyboard (27 frames).

Animatic

The animatic helped me visualize the movement, edit the timing of the motion piece, and test it with users for feedback.

Time: 40 seconds, 14 frames.

Art Direction and Branding

As for the look and movement, I was drawn and inspired by pieces of work such as Haikyu!!; Giant Ant's work for Estrella Damm, Valorant, and many others. I wanted the piece to have a rhythmic change of shapes from geometric to organic, to have playful angles, and weird proportions.

Making of guiding assets

These assets were created to guide me through my motion/animation process, by having established camera angles, character movement, and background.

Reference videos: I collected references and recorded a professional volleyball player and coach, Jade Helter!

Procreate dreams: used the reference videos to make rough frame by frame animations.

Cinema 4D: created a rough Volleyball court and added effectors to get the background, amount of space and perspective right.

These collapse into

Rough Animation

Animation Process

Finally, based on the rough animation, I developed everything for the motion piece.

Illustrator: created the characters for the scenes.

Frame by Frame vector: modified the path with keyframes within the shapes to create movement.

Cinema 4D: refined the Volleyball court, camera movement, and look (with Toon Shading) to use it as the location/background, to optimize file and work load.

Reflection

This project was my first big motion design project, this piece teached me so much about this incredible design field. I learned a lot about the iterative process of making motion pieces, from the never ending storyboards to the carefully crafted keyframes; but I also learned a lot about myself, how to be more determined, to trust my decisions more, but also how hungry I still am to keep learning and creating. Now that it's done, with the knowledge and experience I gained from this project and my overall experience in VFS, there are processes and elements I would make different, I have a long way to go!

Looking back at how much I did made me emotional, it made me appreciate myself even more, my skill and sacrifices; but this project wouldn't have seen the light of day without the guide from my mentor, instructors, family and lover, friends and DD64 friends/classmates, the support, trust, and constant cheers motivated me so much, and I'm forever grateful for that. This project is as much mine as it is theirs.
